Have you always wanted to learn how to play guitar and get acoustic guitar lessons but didn't really know where to start? I used to be that person but I was determined I would figure it out and succeed at it. That was 10 years ago and I gotta say I am a damn fine acoustic guitar player now thanks to the lessons and I'm going to share with you how I did it.
10 years ago I decided I wanted to take up acoustic guitar playing, not ever having played one before. I knew that it would be no easy task as it is such a harder instrument to play than the electric guitar - I took lessons for that too. My first step was to head down to the local Long and McQuades and spend an afternoon plucking with some 30 different acoustics. That's the beauty of the major guitar shops; they don't mind if you stay all day and you can muck around with anything you want. They are also really cool and helpful too. I asked lots of questions and even had a few of the salespeople play along with a little and give some pointers. They even recommended a few people that were masters of acoustic guitar lessons for beginners.
After 6 hours or so of picking away on some very awesome sounding acoustic guitars I finally found one that felt comfortable and sounded great. My fingers were absolutely raw (the strings on an acoustic are much harder to fret than an electric). The staff gave their blessing on the one I chose. It was a Yamaha spucetop steel string. Around the $280 mark; not bad for a quality entry level player. What a great feeling walking out of there with an awesome guitar. It was a good mix of quality and decent price. I still hadn't decided on the acoustic guitar lessons yet though.
After a few days of reading and trying to play some tablature from a few different acoustic music books that I bought, I decided it was time to get some beginner acoustic guitar lessons from a local guy that I had been recommended to by some friends. He had been giving reasonably priced lessons to a few other folks in my community and he had an opening for me. It really only took 1 session to improve 100-fold. After a few months I was ready to cut back my lessons from once a week to once a month. I still occasionally drop in and see him and we spend an hour or so playing.
Now I'm strumming like a semi-pro with my latest, a Gibson acoustic guitar, well not quite semi-pro haha. I have improved to a point where I can bring the acoustic out when friends and family come over and strum away to our favorite songs. Learning the acoustic was one of the most fun and inspiring things I have ever done but it took a lot of dedication and hard work. Although there seem to be a lot of free online guitar lessons out there they all seem to give just a small taste and in the end you'll be paying anyways. Check them out because you will find some of some great value and quality. I recommend developing a relationship with someone who comes with testimonials and that can act as your mentor.
If you're really interested in playing acoustic guitar or any other guitar instruments then read some online reviews to determine what might suit your budget but at the same time be a quality instrument. Then, go down to your local guitar shop and spend an afternoon playing various models and brands until you're sure. You'll be happy you did.
That's what I did to learn to play the guitar. Happy playing!
