Dimebag’s Dean Razorback

The Dean Razorback guitar is a custom designed axe that is modeled after the ML series. This guitar was created by the late, great, Dimebag Darrell (Darrell Lance Abbott) of Pantera and Damage Plan. The basic body shape is the same as an ML but with some significant points, curves and carve-outs.

I’ve played heavy metal since the 80’s. I grew up playing Ozzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Metallica. It wasn’t until 1990 that I discovered Dimebag and Pantera. That’s when I started playing on my first Dean guitars. What I always loved about the “V” style guitar was how you could hook it into leg while being crouched but I always found them a little unbalanced. The ML with its extended bottom front horn made for a perfectly balanced guitar.

The Dean Razorback guitars that I’ve played to date have the most beautiful murals painted on them, plus they come in different price packages to give every budding metal shredder a chance to own one.

My Dean Dimebag Razorback is a USA Tribute Rust model, which was the very guitar the master was working on when he was taken from us. In keeping in tradition with Dime’s sound, I have swapped out the Dimebucker and Dimetime pickups for the Bill Lawrence L500s that he used. These guitars absolutely scream and are very precise. The solid-made mahogany body and neck are assembled with stress relief to keep from twisting and are not prone to breaking. The neck is lightning fast for me, which is great because I have bigger hands.

This particular model is not cheap but it is made with ultra high quality in mind in a USA factory. It’s truly a precision work of art and all of the USA made Razorbacks have artist grade murals painted onto them. I do like the price tag on this particular Dean electric guitar as it makes them a little more exclusive and only someone that is serious about these masterpieces would consider forking out the cash.

If you’re looking for a little better value there is the Dean Razorback DB line that is assembled overseas. The bodies on the DB model are made of Basswood, which is a little cheaper than mahogany and not quite the same, deep tone. The pickups are Dean designed, which means they’re overseas made :-) and definitely not of the same electronic quality as the USA Seymour’s. Having said that, you can save yourself a couple thousand dollars, get yourself a Razorback and add the better quality hardware systematically over time. I mean hell, I changed out my Seymour’s right away. Not because they’re crap (they're fantastic pickups) but because I prefer the Bill Lawrence buckers.

I don’t use this particular guitar for gigging with as it has a special place as a tribute to Dimebag. I have several other Dean’s that I play that are my workhorse guitar instruments. Recently I’ve had my eye on getting another one but like I said earlier, they're pricey :-) . I’m not just a musician but also a collector.
