Whichever style of music you love or the type of guitar you want to play, when you’re first learning to play the instrument you should choose to learn some very easy songs to play on guitar. We always want to jump to the more difficult stuff before we’re ready; this is human nature. What can happen if you try to learn the hard songs and skills too quickly is a level of frustration can overwhelm you and you may even decide to quit because of it.
Ok, let’s start with an easy song to play on guitar: Back in Black, by AC/DC. This is one of those easy guitar songs that never gets old and is always a lot of fun to play. You should be playing on an electric guitar for this one on a mildly overdriven amp. Most AC/DC songs sound really good with a bit of overdrive or light distortion. You don’t want to get too dirty though.
Another great one is For Whom the Bell Tolls, by Metallica. I know what you’re thinking…”Metallica, oh my god that’s not an easy band”. True enough, but FWTBT is one of their easy songs to play on electric guitar because it has a smooth and medium paced rhythm to it. You can slow it down just a little and make sure you use a metronome to do this, and then just bring it back up to speed once all the parts have been perfected. This song really has a lot of different parts that will work on different types of skills that are essential.
Bad Moon Rising is another one of the super easy songs to play on guitar that has a timeless strum to it and very beautiful melodies. An acoustic guitar or your electric guitar unplugged will do just fine. When I was learning how to play I had a bit of trouble getting the hang of strumming but when I tried it on this song I learned it instantly. It just has the perfect structure to the song. Again, if you need to slow it down to get the rhythm cleanly…then just do it.
I’ll finish your list of songs off with Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin). Now I’ll disclaim to you that you most likely are not going to learn how to play the solo for quite some time but the finger picked style of the rest of the song is an essential piece that I really recommend you learn. I realize you probably haven’t ever thought of STH as one of those easy songs to play on guitar but you’ll be surprised once you sit down and start playing. You can play this on any guitar instruments, either plugged or unplugged. As long as you’re playing it finger style you will learn a great skill.
Take these tips and put them to good use if you’re a new guitar player and wanting to excel to a higher level of learning. Just stay focused on playing the songs correctly before you decide to play them at 200 bpm
and you’ll do just fine.
