For a Great Beginners Guitar – Try Out the Schecter Omen 6

I tend to go to the guitar store a little more than I should but that’s just because I love guitars so much :-) . I recently played a Schecter Omen 6 guitar for a few hours and tested it on a few different amps and across many different types of songs as well. The results varied across the different tests that determine (to me) what makes a good guitar. So on with the Schecter Omen 6 review.

Body
With so many different Schecter guitars to choose from, it’s really impressive that each model and sub-model keep up with a high standard. The Schecter Omen 6 is a solid body, basswood guitar that comes in the colors of white, black, red and walnut; pretty good selection of finishes. The shape is that of a strat, dual asymmetrical horns with pretty good access when playing the high frets.

Neck
The neck on the Schecter Omen 6 is a bolt-on style made of medium grade maple. Bolt-on necks have their good and bad traits. Typically, if you have problems with a bolt-on neck, such as cracking, breaking or twisting, you just unbolt it a swap it out. Where it can lack is in the sustain department. That’s exactly what lacked on the Schecter Omen 6; decent sustain. As with most Schecter instruments, the Omen comes with a 24 fret, rosewood fingerboard, which is great for solos and any double octave styles.

Tone and Electronics
I wasn’t overly impressed with the Diamond Plus pickups on the Schecter Omen 6 but for the price they are too bad. If I was going to buy this guitar I would swap them out for a combo a little more powerful and articulate, but that’s just me. For an entry-level style guitar they are more than adequate. I was able to pull off some decent distortion when I played it through a JCM2000 that was in the store and sounded pretty good with only a slight bit of muddiness. For a cleaner tone I plugged into a '57 champ. This is where I thought the pickups could use a little work. They came across being a little lifeless and dull.

Wrap-up
Overall I would give the Schecter Omen 6 a 6/10 for the complete package. If I was going to buy one of these guitars I might consider a Schecter Omen Extreme because of the mahogany body, which seemed to sound a bit better with the same pickups. If you’re looking for a Schecter Omen Fr (the tremolo version) you’ll have to go with an Extreme as well. The Schecter Omen 6 price tag is in the $300 range and makes it one of the more affordable guitar instruments on the market; a great choice for any budding guitarist on an entry-level budget.
